Miss January!
What is it about the flip of the calendar that suddenly makes us desire change? Why is January 1st so different from any other day? We make our resolutions to eat less, exercise more, get more organized, be more fiscally responsible but rarely do we resolve to get our mind in shape. The gyms and studios across the city fill up and sometime around mid-February, all returns to normal. By early spring, most people have given up on their resolutions and fall back into their old habits and that’s where yoga comes in. Every time I step on my mat, it’s like New Year’s Day. With each practice I’m given a new opportunity to dig deep within myself and focus on what is really important – not the material stuff that we are all so consumed with but a focus on what I want to embody – who I want to be as a person and what I want to attract in my life. Each time the mat is unfurled I allow myself to truly envision what is possible. As the poses get harder physically, I have to work harder mentally to keep that focus. Yoga really becomes the laboratory for life. When I fall out of a pose, or attempt to even get into one to no avail, I’m reminded that everything takes hard work, patience, and most of all non-attachment. When life gets tough, you have to keep your “eye on the prize” as it were, but don’t get discouraged, don’t give up, and don’t let failing keep you from trying again. Through a regular yoga practice I’m allowed to work on my mental “toughness” and then get to apply that same principle off the mat. With every yoga practice I’m given a New Year’s Day – a new opportunity to succeed, to fail and to try-try again. Happy New Year today and every day.
